St Francis of Assisi is known for being a devout and even a defender of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of St Mary. In 1899, a statue of St Francis was erected in this square, just across from the statue of the Immaculate conception commemorating the start of the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Mqabba in 1772.
